Antibiotics have undoubtedly saved millions of lives since their discovery in the early 20th century. And yet, short-term reductionist thinking has led to them being overused with harmful consequences, with antibiotic overuse being one of the top health threats of the 21st century.
Over half of our cells are bacterial so when we take antibiotics, we wipe out a lot of our own function. While antibiotics can be helpful and potentially life-saving, we want to think about how to use these differently.
