The predominant theory of mind in Western culture is that of the “mono-mind” - that we each consist of one, singular personality. However, traditional cultures, more advanced mental models as well as cognitive neuroscience all suggest that it is natural and normal to have multiple personalities, or parts.
Simply understanding this can open the door to tremendous insight into how we work, what makes us tick, and how we can heal.
There are many different ways to work with these parts. But a general suggestion is simply to check in with them regularly. See if there’s a part that’s trying to get your attention. Are there any parts that are in a pattern of conflict? Any young parts needing soothing?
This model provides an accurate and non-threatening way for us to attend to the various parts of our system with compassion.
